Intestinal parasitism, specifically parasitism caused by Cooperia oncophora, Ostertagia ostertagi and Haemonchus placei has been identified as an important cause of production loss in cattle. The control of these parasites relies strongly on the administration of anthelmintic drugs. However, the effectiveness of anthelmintics is threatened by the increasing prevalence and severity of anthelmintic resistance. Several novel control approaches are currently proposed, and among them the target selective anthelmintic treatment (TST) to individual animais instead of the whole herdo However, ali selective treatment strategies come with additional costs for labor and diagnostics. The pros are the slowing of resistance prevalence, lower residues of anthelmintics in meat and rnilk; the cons are the difficulty and time spent on selecting animais in need of treatment, costs with diagnostics and the possibility of lower production. Probably, in beef cattle the uses ofTST have more economic benefits when realized in animal between weaning and 24 months of age. The aim of TST uses is to reduce the frequency and number of treatment with anthelmintics and to maximize the potential benefit by considering environmental and management factors, carrying out less selective pressure on nematodes populations in cattle herds. |
